Welcome to Entry-Level Driver Training: Class A CDL Theory!

In this course, you will become proficient in the knowledge objectives necessary to become a commercial driver. This course is the first step in your journey to obtaining your CDL. You must complete a theory standard curriculum course before you can move on to the behind-the-wheel training at an approved driving school.

The next nine lessons, each containing between four and twelve modules, will present the information appearing on the DMV CDL general knowledge exam.

Before you get started, there are some requirements to complete this course. First, you must upload a valid driver's license or state ID from the state you intend to get licensed in to start the course. You will only have to do this once throughout the entire course. If you are under the age of twenty-one (21), you must consult with a TPR-approved driving school to ensure that you will be able to complete the skills (over-the-road) portion of your training. Some driving schools do not accept students under twenty-one (21).

Once you have completed all nine lessons, you will take a final exam requiring a passing score of 80%. This exam utilizes identity verification and participation monitoring technology requiring you to have a device with video capabilities for the duration of the exam. You will be given three (3) attempts to pass the exam, there is a mandatory twenty-four (24) hour waiting period between each attempt, so you can study the parts of the course you missed. Once you pass the final exam with an 80% or higher, your scores will be sent to the Training Provider Registry (TPR) which tracks compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association (FMCSA) requirements.

For more information about additional requirements for obtaining your CLP or CDL, please review this guide.
